So today was the refresher’s fair at university. Basically it’s a way of signing up to societies and getting free stuff! If I am completely honest, I was somewhat disappointed with the selection of stalls. We were supposed to have a stall to promote ‘pole fitness’ (not sure if I have previously mentioned that Sengagh and I are trying to set up a pole dance society) but weren’t allocated one in the end (probably for the best if I’m completely honest, as I had a lot to do and it would have just taken a lot of time away from other things).
One thing that angers me, is that every time we have some sort of fair at the uni, the army turns up to try and recruit people. It’s not my place to say as different people have different views but I have quite strong opinions on these matters – the main being that if people are at uni, there is a strong chance that they don’t want to join the army as they could have done so on leaving school. Anyway, that’s just my opinion and every body is entitled to their own. Apparently the ‘mod’ doesn’t quite agree with this. A sergeant approached my friends and I and spent a good half an hour attempting to recruit us. It was frustrating, but if my friends were interested then I wasn’t going to stop them. I made it clear, however, that it wasn’t my cup of tea, ‘thank you anyway’. He just would not take no for an answer, interrogating me about why I wasn’t interested, am I so selfish that I don’t want to protect the country, why don’t I agree with the army etc. I made it quite clear that I was well aware that an army is needed but I just would not wish to be a member myself. Apparently this made me a typical member of modern society who is only interested in material possessions, and with 140 jobs available and a guaranteed salary I would be stupid to turn it down. In my opinion if the only thing he was bothered by was the guaranteed salary, then that makes him as bad as me for only wanting money and the abundance of ‘holidays’ he had been on. According to this guy I was now his new ‘challenge’ and he was determined to win me over. Well that did it, I am a stubborn bitch when I get going, I’ll admit that, so this made me more determined not to be won over as I refuse to change my morals on something just because somebody is irritating me. I wasn’t going to argue, however, as I have respect for people especially somebody with such a high status and who risks their life to defend the country. Also, I have friends who are army cadets and want to go into the field like that and I would never argue with them about what they want to do with their lives (I did burst into tears when one of the told me though, but that's a different story! lol). Eventually we managed to leave, but not until I had been humiliated in front of all my friends about my opinions and made to feel smaller than I already am. Not once did I say that he was wrong, as (as I said before) everyone has different beliefs, so I thought it was completely unfair to treat me that way and constantly knock me down.
Yeah, so the fair was a total waste of time if you ask me…oh well :(
I am going into town soon for an optician’s appointment. If I have changed prescription, I will get new frames whilst I am still eligible for NHS subsidies but I hope they don’t cost too much! I am also going to buy a scrapbook from Paperchase to start documenting my three years at university, as I think it will be a good form of relaxation :)
