Every year there is an event at Aldeburgh, Suffolk called a poetry festival. There are perfomances, lecutres and discussions as well as a few other sessions which all have individual costs (free-£15). This year it was last weekend and our poetry tutor managed to arrange a discount cost for students to attend which cost £10 for a day's pass, which was a fantastic offer! So one of my housemates and I went along. It was going to be a bit difficult getting there, but luckily my housemate's aunt lives in a village near Aldeburgh, called Saxmundum, so we were able to stay at hers and she gave us a lift there and back as well as taking us all the way back to uni on Sunday! It was extremely kind of her and also brilliant because there were no trains running from the village on Sunday.
It was a good day, although very tiring! There was a very interesting talk from a poet who has dyslexia and has started his own classes to help people learn to read; I found it fascinating as it's the kind of topic which appeals to me. The real reason I went, however, was because John Agard was there and I had seen him on television and read his work. He is such a cheerful man, and very talented. It was a shame that I was so tired because he wasn't on until 9.30pm and it meant I didn't enjoy his performance as much as I had hoped. I am certain that tiredness was the only reason though!
I have not decided if I want to attend next year's yet because it did take a lot of organisation; I suppose I will see how much it costs and who is going to be performing.
